The pearl shell displays the significance of the pearling industry to the
people of Broome
eg: their successes and their sorrows.
The sun greatly affects our whole climate. It is a symbol of God’s glory,
a symbol of the Risen Christ whose face shone as the sun at His Transfiguration.
As the sun is physical centre of our earthly existence,
so Christ is the centre of our whole existence.
The Cross reminds us of Jesus’ death for our salvation.
Mary our Patron.
We see the book of knowledge at the base of the cross
- the book also
takes on the shape of a bird (symbolising the Holy Spirit).
The life of the ocean and the land as part of God’s creation are symbolised
by
the Goanna and Fish.
Pindan the colour and name of the soil on which Broome rests.
The Blue Sky of the Kimberley
The Sand of Cable Beach and Roebuck Bay.
The Stars of the Kimberley and the Southern Cross.
St Mary's College, Broome
St Mary's College is a K–12 Catholic school situated in
The college caters for the diverse educational, spiritual and
cultural needs
of its students and provides
both vocational and tertiary entrance courses.
The college has a strong Christian emphasis,
which is reflected in the
Religious Education and Pastoral Care programs.
Broome is situated in the Kimberley, in far-northern Western Australia.
It is one of the fastest growing regions of Western Australia
and this growth
may be attributed to economic development in agriculture, fishing, mining
and tourism.
Over the past century the pearling industry, with its need for
divers and service workers,
produced the multicultural blend for which Broome
is now known.
Though not always peaceful, and certainly not without periods
of deep racism,
European, Aboriginal, Chinese, Japanese, Malay, Indian, Arabian
and Filipino divers,
lugger crews and industry workers all established themselves
in Broome
and built a cosmopolitan community out of the mangrove and red
sand.
The St Mary’s College Logo symbolises the land on which Broome is located
as well as the ocean that surrounds us.
The origins of the logo are the Christian representations encompassed in the
local environment
The community came up with it over a number of months of consultation with students,
staff, parents, community members and the
Bishop of the Kimberley during questionnaires and meetings.
