The Guyarabi (Planchonia careya cocky apple) and Ngaliwany (Persoonia falcata wild pear) that began to fruit in Larja are now ready to be picked. The Ngaliwany can be picked from the tree when yellow or gathered from the ground. The black and shrivelled up ones can be pounded and soaked in water to make a drink. Today. sugar is added.
Other trees are also in fruit, like Gabiny (Terminalia
ferdinandiana-billygoat plum). Guwal (Flueggea virosa sbsp.sandwood). and Magabala (Marsdenia viridiflora-bush banana).
Mankala is the best time to eat the Magabala because now it is soft
and sweet and the whole fruit can be eaten. There are other types of Magabala too. One, a smaller species (Marsdenia sinerascens) is poisonous and care must be taken not to eat this one by mistake.Anther plant food available in Mankala is yams. The seeds of the Darlab (Brachychiton diversifolius - nothern kurrajoong) that fell to the ground in Larja are now small plants. These are called Junjudany, the roots of which are edible. The people used a Milgin (digging stick) made from the hard wood of the Warrage (Acacia monticola) plant to dig the root. The Junjudany root was then baked in hot ashes and eaten.
