Animals In The Bush Are Skinny
The Barrjanyiny (Macropus agilis nigrescens- agile wallaby) and
Mirdimarlu (Macropus rufus spp.- plains kangaroo) are skinny now. Later in the cold season they will be fat.
In The Sea
In the sea the Gurlibil (Chelonia mydas – green turtles) and other sea turtles have moved away from the coast and so are no longer sought after. However their eggs can still be collected along the beach.
The Birdany (stingray from the Dasaytididae family) and Jurrawayi (Loxodon macrorhinus- slite eye shark) are still fat. The different types of stingrays the people eat are: Jaiya (Himantura uarnak- coach whip stingray). Yugugurru (Dasyatis sephen – cowtail stingray) and Jangabarri (oyster back stingray). The Girngirn (Amphotistius kuhlii- blue spotted stingray) is not eaten as it is believed to be poisonous.
Throughout Mankala the sea is dirty from rain washing red sand and rubbish into it. This makes it hard for the people to see the Birdany and Jurrawayi. However on calmer days they still go and hunt for them.
