AUSTRALIANS have opened their wallets to the
distraught survivors of the tsunami in Asia.
Individuals and big businesses have donated more than $26.5 million to large appeals.
The Federal Government has also committed $35 million and other forms of aid.
The money promised by average Australians almost quadrupled in 24 hours from $7 million on Wednesday, and should continue to surge.
Red Cross Australia alone collected more than $3.2 million in the five hours to 5pm yesterday -- a rate of more than $10,660 a minute.
Last night, the aid organisation had raised about $14 million
