MARY MacKILLOP  (one step closer to Sainthood - Oct 2007)

THE push for the canonisation of Blessed Mary MacKillop to become Australia’s first saint may have slowed, but an extraordinary number of “remarkable favours” are being recounted due to her intercession around the world.

Sr Maria Casey, vice-postulator for Bl Mary MacKillop’s cause for canonisation, says the devotion to Mary MacKillop over the past few years has been “phenomenal”, with many thousands expected to visit her tomb during next year’s World Youth Day.

Her feast is celebrated next August 8th.

A second miracle is required for the Melbourne-born nun to be fast-tracked to sainthood and, according to Sr Maria, there are some “hopeful signs”.

In the meantime, each week Mary MacKillop Place in North Sydney is flooded with letters and phone calls from people across Australia and Europe who claim they have been “cured” through her intercession.

Six-year-old burns survivor Sophie Delezio carries a picture of Mary MacKillop with her as a constant reminder of the role she played in saving her life.
