World Youth Day was an initiative of Pope John Paul II inspired by massive gatherings of young people in Rome celebrating Youth Jubilee in 1984 and the United Nations International Year of Youth in 1985.
First World Youth Day - Rome 1986 on Palm Sunday.

50,000 Australians planning to attend World Youth Day 2008 so far
More than 50,000 Australians are planning to attend World Youth Day 2008 (WYD08) in Sydney, with the event still 11 months away.
WYD08 organisers said the latest group registration data showed 184,800 pilgrims are currently expected to take part in the Catholic Church-sponsored event from 15 to 20 July next year - 50,710 of whom are from Australia.
The leading source countries, with current expected pilgrim numbers, are:

More than 500,000 people are expected to take part in at least one WYD08 event, which will feature the first visit to Australia by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.
