Welcome to St Mary’s College, Broome. As a beginning Principal, I feel extremely blessed to be given the opportunity to lead such a great Catholic school community which has a rich history of educating students from across the Kimberley region for over 100 years. I believe it is important to recognise the people who have put so much into making St Mary’s what it is today and this information can be found in our history section of this website. A number of current students, families and staff members have been associated with St Mary’s College for many years. Enrolments continue to grow and in the census for February 2012, 648 students were enrolled from K-12.
Our staff at St Mary’s College are committed to helping each student to grow in their Catholic faith and Christian values and to encourage each student to strive for excellence and to achieve their full potential. Throughout 2012 our teachers will continue working towards implementation of the Australian Curriculum from K-12. At the beginning of 2012 we also introduced a ‘new’ House system from K-12 and have implemented Pastoral Care Groups on the secondary campus.
This year of great significance to Broome and the Kimberley Region is the establishment of a Special Needs Learning Network Centre which is scheduled to open at the commencement of Term 2. Throughout the year I will be working with staff to explore other opportunities including the expansion our Vocational Education and Training subject offerings and other learning programmes that will meet the needs of each of our 648 students at the College. Many students and staff at the College embrace service learning opportunities in the community and into the future I also look forward to the College developing a recognised service learning programme.
Our College is well supported by parents, guardians and friends of the St Mary’s community. We have a very committed College Board and Parents and Friends Association. I am grateful for the generous amount of time and effort that is given by our community members to support the work of educating each of our students.
I look forward to a long association with the community of St Mary’s College.
